What projector screen gain means
Screen gain expresses how much light a screen reflects toward a specified viewing direction compared with a reference surface. A 1.0-gain screen is often treated as neutral reference territory. Higher gain concentrates more light; lower gain reflects less toward the measurement axis.
Why the Black Series uses 0.6 gain
The NothingProjector Black Series currently lists a gain of 0.6. In a UST ALR design, the goal is not maximum diffuse brightness. The optical structure is trying to control where light goes so that projector light reaches viewers while more unwanted room light does not.
Brightness vs contrast
Imagine a bright living room. A 1.0 white screen may return more projector light, but it also returns more room light, lifting blacks. A directional 0.6-gain ALR surface may be dimmer in absolute terms yet produce a better perceived image because the black floor stays lower.
Gain does not tell you everything

Practical takeaway
Do not reject the Black Series because “0.6 is less than 1.0.” Instead, ask whether the projector is bright enough at your chosen size and whether the room benefits from ALR. For many living-room UST setups, that is the more relevant trade.
